Steve Biko, in full Bantu Stephen Biko, (1946-1977), was a South African anti-apartheid activist and the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, as well as the South African Students Organization (SASO), which was a Black alternative to the liberal National Union of South African Students (NUSAS). His ideas were articulated in a series of articles published under the pseudonym Frank Talk. His death from injuries suffered while in police custody made him an international martyr for South African Black nationalism.
